Legend has it that Christoflel visagie was hunting in these parts with his wife when they came accross a peculiar depression in the ground cotaining water and something that looked like marble. When Christoffel fell ill, his wife loaded some of the marble into tho ox-wagon and they returned to Pretoria where they confirmed their find. They later returned to mine the marble but transport problems forced them to abandon this endeavor.

Everybody seems to agree on the legend so far but the naming of 'Marble Hall' has more legends attacked to it from simply being Anglicized from the dutch 'Marmerhol' to a legend that tells the story of Christoffel Visagie showing the depression to same British veterans who corrupted the dutch word 'hol', meaning 'hole' and came up with the similar sounding 'Hall'.

Either way the Marble Lime Company started mining the area in 1929 for lime and the 26 different types of marble found in the 'hole'. In 1936 a branch rail was built to the mine. The village was surveyed in 1942 and proclaimed in 1945.
