Named after P.J.Greyling, a stepson of Piet Retief and one of the pioneers of the region. The town was founded by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1909 but in 1913 the town was moved 5km north to it's present location. The town was proclaimed in 1914 and in 1920 the first town council was appointed.
