Graskop is one of the famous towns of Mpumalanga and originated as a gold mining town in the 1880's. There is evidence that is has been used by various travelers since 1837 such as Andries Potgieter (a leader of the Great Trek).
The town is situated on a farm called 'Graskop', owned by one of the legendary escarpment and Lowveld characters, Abel Erasmus. Graskop was declared a town in 1914 after completion of the Nelspruit-Sabie-Graskop railway line earlier that same year.
Today the town is a commercial center for the local timber industry, a popular Mpumalanga getaway destination and known for it's pancake bars.
