The town of Machadodorp (as it was previously called) started as a railway station opened in 1894 and named in honour of Joachim Machado. He was a Portuguese engineer who surveyed the route for the Pretoria to Lourenza Marques railway in 1881. Before the railway station. The town was declared in 1904. This location was often used as a outspan and staging post by transport riders.

The town is home to a radioactive thermal sulfur spring which has been developed as a health resort.

The town was renamed to eNtokozweni in 2010.
