When the delagoa-Pretaria railway line reached the top of the escarpment overlooking the Elands valley, the Transvaal government needed a supply depot to continue construction down the steep slopes of the mountain. Portion of a farm was purchased for this purpose. The railway depot and later the town was called 'Waterval Boven' meaning 'Above the waterfall' in dutch.
In October 2009 the town name was changed to Emgwenya.
