The area now known as Carolina was once a popular outspan and stopover for transport riders. It got even more popular when gold was discovered in what later would become Barberton. Traffic soon increased to an extent that merited establishing a trading and staging post.

The exact origins of the town is unclear. According to the Transvaal government gazette, the town was laid out on the farms Groenvlei and Goedehoop but according to other sources Mr. C.J. Coetzee donated part of his farm, Steyndraai on condition that the town be named after his wife.
