The town of Breyten is situated on a farm originally called Bothasrus. The farm was given to Lukas Potgieter in 1888 as compensation for losing his leg at the battle of Skuinshoogte during the first Anglo-Boer war. He in turn sold part of the farm to Nicolaas Breytenbach after whom the town is named.

The town was founded in 1906 approximately one year after the railway from Springs reached the farm in late 1905.

Breyten itself lies at the foot of Klipstapel, the highest point on the watershed between the Vaal river system and Olifants, Komati and other system that flow east towards the Indian ocean.
