Amsterdam was the capital of New Scotland. At the time is was called Roburnia and was the dream of an adventurer, Alexander McCorkindale. His dream was to settle about 300 scottish immegrants to the east, build farms, towns and a road to a port which he planned to develop. The Transvaal government sold him a block of 200 farms and the first 50 settlers arrived in 1867.

Unfortunately he died of fever in 1871 while inspecting a site for his new harbour. The town of Roburnia was surveyed in 1881 and in 1882 President Paul Kruger changed the name to Amsterdam.
