Amersfoort was proclaimed in 1888 on land donated by two farmers for the purposes of starting a new congregation. Reverend Frans Lion Cachet founded the parish and named the town after a town with the same name in the Netherlands.
Another 850ha of land was purchased from one of the original donors when the original area became too small for the developing settlement. The bridge over the Vaal river joining Amersfoort to Ermelo was built in 1896 and is a national monument.
