A holiday town south of Durban renowned for it's warm weather and sandy beaches. It has a long holiday history dating back to 1897 when the town witnessed the official opening of the railway line. The first hotel was constructed early in 1898, was surveyed as a town in 1928 and achieved municipal status in 1952.

It was named after the local river which according to local legend, got it's name when the Zulu King Shaka led his army down to the south coast on a raid against the Pondos in 1828, he rested on the banks of the river. After tasting it's sweet water he exclaimed "Kanti amanzi mToti" which means "So, the water is sweet". The river then became known as "Amanzimtoti".
