A small Free State village which is the trade, church, school and administrative center for a large farming community.
The town was established in 1905 on land purchased from Adriaan and Johannes Bezuidenhout. Kestell was named after Reverend J.D.Kestell who was a revered cultural leader and served in a Boer commando as a field chaplain during the second Anglo-Boer war.
The most dominating feature of the town is the Dutch Reformed church built in sandstone and designed by Gerhard Moerdyk who was also responsible for designing the Voortrekker monument in Pretoria.
